Education/Teaching Background: Kathleen Alviar is the choral music director at Black Hills High School and Tumwater Middle School. She received her BA in Music Education (Magna Cum Laude) from Eastern Washington University in 1996 and her MM in Choral Conducting (With Distinction) from the University of Washington in 2011. Prior to teaching in Tumwater, Kathleen was the director of choral music at Hermiston High School, in Hermiston, Oregon, where she also taught audio technology, music theory & history, percussion, and theater. In addition to her work as a music educator, Kathleen directed choirs at Lincoln Heights United Church of Christ in Spokane and First Christian Church in Olympia, as well as an inmate chorus at the Two Rivers Correctional Institute in Umatilla, Oregon. She has also served as a clinician and guest conductor in Washington and Oregon. 
 
In addition to music, Kathleen enjoys hiking, traveling, writing, painting, and spending time with her family (husband James and daughters Claire & Sophia) and her two Bassett Hounds (Beau & Cecil.)
